The format of webinars is that abstract/papers are presented by their first author to promote presentations by young researchers, and questions and answers are exchanged throughout the presentation to value discussion and attendee input. Participation is free for any member of ISCB or SMBE, but registration is required. ===== Next webinar ===== ** Monday, March 23 at 11:00 AM EDT** ** Title: Evolution of gene duplication: from redundancy to dependency ** by **Christian Landry**, Université Laval. **Abstract**: Gene duplication affects genome evolution in many ways and is the primary source of novel functions. One consequence of gene duplication is the addition of connections among proteins in cellular networks. Although many of these new connections are likely to confer novel and advantageous functions to the cell, some may also reflect the accumulation of neutral mutations that have led to the evolution of molecular complexes. I will present our work over the past seven years to understand this phenomenon, which has involved multidisciplinary approaches, including high-throughput screening, genome editing and engineering, as well as the determination of the structures of novel protein complexes evolved in the laboratory.
